Billfish Seasons

Although billfish have seasons, the waters around Kadavu Island are so oceanic that billfish, in particular blue marlin, are caught year round. If there are tuna around, there will be blues around.

Blue Marlin aboard Bite Me

The blue marlin fishing can sometimes be relatively quiet around the months of October and November however this depends on when the summer warm current moves in with the summer run of yellowfin tuna.

The best weather of offshore heavy tackle Blue Marlin fishing is found in the summer months – December to May.

Black Marlin can be caught during March but the best months are August / September. This is however winter time when we often experience tradewinds that can limit us to fishing the lee side of the island.

Striped Marlin show briefly during August / September when the water temp dips below 25 degrees. We also catch the occasional juvenile striped marlin during April / May.

From May to October, large Pacific sailfish gather in packs along the reef and we target these packs using light tackle gear. Most sails are around 50-80lbs however we do get a few well over 100lbs.
