Talk to us

Tell us what you want to catch and how you want to catch it.Nice view from the bar on Bite me fishing Fiji

We offer many different types of fishing. We can for example target saifish trolling lures, trolling circle hook rigged skip-baits or using bait and switch techniques. Its really up to you and your level of experience.

We usually fish 30lb line class for most general fishing as this is reasonably sporting but we are quite happy to make it more challenging and target big gamefish on light tackle.

Don't want to troll all day ? Tell us and we will structure the day to include some popper casting or deepwater jigging / bottom fishing.

For example, we can head out to the Kadavu Trench in the morning and troll big marlin lures for blues, yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi. Swing back in to the barrier reef after lunch and put out the 30lb gear for wahoo, sailfish and Narrow barred mackerel. On the way home, stop off at the best GT and bluefin trevally spots for a bit of popper casting to round off the day.

Want to bring your own favourite rod and use it?

No problem. We are happy for anglers to make use of their own gear, though we will advise if we think it is suitable, or likely to last 10 seconds before disintegrating.

Tell us if you would prefer calmer waters or are happy to corkscrew around all day if the fish are there.

You are out there to have fun, not sit in a corner looking green and feeling miserable. If you start to feel unwell or are worried about getting seasick, tell the crew. Here in Kadavu, we always have a lee side to the island and can find calm waters to fish.

Once Onboard

Listen to the safety briefing. It’s not only done to fulfil Maritime Safety regulations, it also gives you information about where emergency items are stored such as First Aid Kits and Fire Extinguishers, where you should or should not go and what you should or should not do on Bite Me.Bite me at Matava, Fiji

Tell us your level of experience. Do you know what to do when a reel starts screeming ?

We try to judge the experience of anglers and are happy to teach the essential basics to beginners.

It will make a big difference to your days enjoyment. The last thing we want is to lose a fish because of simple confusion on the deck.

I once watched 3 anglers start a lengthy discussion on who should pick up a screaming reel whilst a 100lb sailfish tail walked towards the horizon. Despite us turning and chasing the fish, the sail took over 700 yards of line and spooled us. I was lost for words. (except for a few colourful four letter ones)

Even if you are experienced and understand its operation, please don’t fiddle with the equipment. We measure and carefully set drags. If you accidentally bump a reel setting – tell us.

On a Game boat, everything has a place and everything in its place. The crew may need to get something quickly so don't move things around. Don’t rummage through tackle boxes or pull out equipment and toss it back in a jumbled mess. You may end up with a loose hook through your hand.

When the deckie goes into action and takes a leader or gaff in hand, only the angler and the deckie should be at the transom. It you are there too, you are in the way. Please keep well back. Crowding the deckie not only blocks my view of what is going on, it is positively dangerous. If you stand on a leader coil or get tangled in it, you and the deckie could be yanked overboard. The deckie and angler may well need to move quickly about the cockpit. Don't get in their way. Take any close-up photographs when the fish is tagged and under control.

When a fish comes aboard, stand well back. A lot of the fish we catch here have serious sets of teeth that can cut to the bone or remove fingers with just a casual swipe. Most lures have 2 or more hooks. One may be in the fish’s mouth, the other may be swinging free near the fish's head, just waiting to embed itself in you. We carry bolt cutters aboard Bite Me. They are not there to cut off fish, they are there for people. Don't go there, its not pretty.

Game boats and large quantities of alcohol do not mix. If you get drunk aboard one of my vessels, I will consider you a danger to the crew who will have to rescue you when you fall overboard. You will be going

straight home.

Some Do’s and Don’ts:-

Do:

  • Take a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. You will get a lot of glare reflected off the sea, even on cloudy days.

  • Wear non marking soft flat soled shoes.

  • Ask, if you want to come up and see the bridge.

  • Eat your catch – you won’t ever eat a fresher tastier fish than the one you just landed.

  • Respect the boat. Don’t trash it. Rubbish makes its way to the bilge and blocks bilge pumps.

  • Enjoy the whole day’s experience, not just the fishing!

Mahi mahi fishing on Bite Me FijiDon’t:

  • Brag before you go about how many fish you are going to catch. It’s bound to blank your day.

  • Step on board wearing muddy, sandy shoes or shoes that may damage or mark the teak deck.

  • Fiddle with fishing equipment settings.

  • Put a rod butt down on a teak deck – It will damage the teak. All rods go in rod holders.

  • Crowd round the deckie with a camera when he is tracing or gaffing a fish.

  • Access the bridge, foredeck or engine rooms. They are out of bounds.

  • Litter. Never throw any type of rubbish (including cigarette butts) overboard.

  • March up to the bridge, plonk yourself down in the deckie’s seat and put your feet up on the skipper's console. Unless you want a swim.
